AI is no longer just a tool on the horizon — it’s a transformative force reshaping industries, customer expectations, and competitive dynamics. From operational processes to product design, talent development to business models, generative AI is redefining what’s possible — and what’s expected.
Yet many boards are struggling to keep pace. The demands on leadership have shifted, and today’s boards must move beyond oversight to active, future-focused guidance. That means understanding AI not just as a technology, but as a strategic inflection point.
In our latest Exploring Leaders podcast episode, we were joined by Charlotta Nilsson — Chief Operating Officer at Paradox Interactive and board member in sectors spanning banking, compliance, and early-stage investing. With a background in physics, early experience in AI as far back as 1993, and leadership across gaming, telco, and technology services, Charlotta offers a rare blend of strategic foresight and operational grit.
Beyond the Buzz: AI as a Strategic Shift
Charlotta’s operational role in the gaming industry keeps her at the cutting edge of customer engagement and digital product innovation. But her message is relevant for every industry: AI is not just a tool — it’s a catalyst for business model reinvention.
She challenges leaders and boards to move beyond reactive automation and instead focus on opportunity creation:
- How can AI allow us to do what was previously impossible?
- Where can we reimagine entire customer journeys?
- What risks are worth taking — and which ones are we avoiding out of habit?
Her key reminder: technology itself is rarely the bottleneck — aligning people, decisions, and pace is the true leadership challenge.
Boards and AI: From Blind Spots to Bold Strategy
Charlotta points to a critical gap: most boards are not yet digitally or AI savvy enough to provide the right guidance. While risks are closely monitored, opportunities are often underexplored — or delayed due to lack of understanding.
Two major research efforts now reinforce the urgency of upgrading board capabilities:
- MIT CISL’s 2025 study by Stephanie Woerner, Peter Weill, and colleagues shows that digitally and AI-savvy boards consistently outperform their peers in value creation, innovation, and resilience. Yet only a small percentage of boards globally meet the criteria for “savvy.”
- The “Boards & AI” study led by Professors Robin Tegiland & Stanislav Shekshnia and Fernanda Torre & Liselotte Engstam explores how board leadership itself must evolve in the age of AI. Their work highlights that boards must become more agile, curious, and interdisciplinary — stepping beyond compliance into experimentation, futures thinking, and ethical foresight.
Charlotta’s boardroom message is clear:
“If you don’t understand the impact and alternatives, you can’t guide the business forward.”
She urges boards to:
- Define a clear innovation risk appetite by area — not just in general
- Use board meetings not only for control, but for strategic reflection
- Actively experiment with emerging tools to build hands-on understanding
- Bridge silos — bringing tech, ethics, customer behavior, and business model conversations into one shared narrative
